Personal auto vs. business auto insurance
Maybe you already have a personal auto insurance policy, which is great. However, it likely won't provide coverage for accidents that occur while driving for your business.
If you utilize your vehicle for business purposes, you might need a commercial auto insurance policy if you:
• Deliver any goods, including pizza, flowers or other products
• Provide a service that involves regularly using a vehicle
• Carry equipment you use for work, such as cleaning or landscaping tools
• Go to job sites
Having an auto insurance policy customized for your business is crucial, regardless of whether your vehicle is essential to your daily operations or something you only use occasionally for work.
You may be required by law to have commercial auto insurance
It's important to note that in most states, businesses are required by law to have commercial auto coverage for their owned vehicles, at least for certain types of accidents. The most common requirement is liability insurance for injuries and property damage.
Additional coverage requirements can vary depending on the state. For instance, some states also mandate uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage and medical payments coverage, also known as personal injury protection.
To determine the type of insurance you need, you'll need to consider factors like the types of vehicles your business owns, how they are used, and who operates them.
Business car insurance can provide more coverage
For many business owners, the line between work and personal life can be blurred. Even if you have only one vehicle for all your transportation needs, the risks you face while driving for work can be different from those while driving for personal reasons. This is where a commercial auto policy with more extensive coverage can come in handy. Additionally, if you have employees who operate your vehicles, your commercial auto insurance policy can cover them up to the limits of the policy.
Commercial auto insurance can help you attract customers
Your customers can also benefit from your commercial auto insurance policy, as it demonstrates that your business is prepared for unforeseen events. It shows that you understand that things don't always go according to plan, but that you are ready to provide reliable service nonetheless. Additionally, some customers may require you to provide a certificate of insurance before they agree to work with you, so having commercial auto insurance can help you meet their requirements and establish trust.
Commercial auto insurance provides coverage for injuries and damages resulting from car accidents that occur during business activities. In most states, businesses are required to have commercial auto insurance for their company-owned vehicles to help pay for medical expenses and property damage in case of an accident.
Some of the things that commercial auto insurance can help pay for include:
• Medical expenses
• Property damage
• Underinsured motorists
• Collision repairs
• Rental reimbursement
• Towing

Who can drive a car that’s insured under a GravySpoon Commercial Auto policy?
It is important to have anyone who frequently drives your vehicle listed on your GravySpoon commercial auto policy. While occasional drivers may still be covered by your insurance, those who regularly use the vehicle for your business may not be covered if they are not listed on your policy.
How do I know if I need Commercial Auto insurance?
Commercial auto insurance is a legal requirement in most states if you or your employees drive vehicles that are titled to your business. Additionally, even if you use your personal vehicle for work-related purposes, your personal auto insurance may not provide coverage, and you may need to obtain commercial auto coverage.
For instance, if you work as a house cleaner and use your personal vehicle to travel to the homes you clean, you may think that your regular car insurance is enough. However, if you have an accident while driving to a job, your personal insurance might not cover it.
There are several other situations in which you might need to consider commercial auto insurance, such as when you use your vehicle for:
• Tow a trailer carrying your work equipment
• Transport goods
• Help your employees get to job sites
Hired and non-owned auto insurance is a type of commercial auto coverage that can come in handy for small businesses that require their employees to use personal vehicles or rented cars for work purposes. With this insurance, accident damages are covered, and it can be added as an upgrade to commercial auto insurance from GravySpoon.
I use my personal vehicle for my business. Can I insure it with this policy?
Certainly! If your personal vehicle is used for business purposes, it can be insured under GravySpoon's commercial auto policy.
For instance, if you own a van that is used for both personal and business purposes such as transporting goods as a delivery driver, our policy will cover it when it is used for work-related reasons.
However, please keep in mind that there are some restrictions to the types of vehicles we can cover. We are unable to provide coverage for certain high-end vehicles and vehicles larger than standard trucks or SUVs.
Does Commercial Auto insurance cover personal use for my own vehicle?
Yes, if your vehicle is covered by our commercial auto insurance, it will be protected for both personal and work use. This means that if you use the vehicle for your business purposes, such as getting to job sites, and also use it on the weekends for personal activities, like hauling fishing gear, your commercial auto insurance would cover you in the event of an accident or damage.
Are the items that I transport with my insured vehicle covered by this policy?
A commercial auto policy provides coverage for the vehicle used for transportation, but not for the items being transported. For instance, if you have a pickup truck that you use to carry ladders and power tools, the policy would only cover the truck and not the equipment. If you are worried about the loss of your tools, you should think about buying tools and equipment insurance. This coverage will help you replace or repair any equipment that is lost, stolen, or damaged if you regularly transport it in your vehicle.
What types of vehicles can I insure? How many vehicles can I insure under one policy?
With a commercial auto policy from GravySpoon, you can obtain coverage for up to 10 vehicles and 15 drivers, except in California where the limit is four vehicles and eight drivers. It doesn't matter whether the vehicles are owned by the business owner or the business, as long as they're used for commercial purposes. However, please note that there are certain types of high-end cars and vehicles larger than standard trucks or SUVs that are not currently eligible for coverage under our policy.
Will my premium change or my policy be cancelled if I file a claim?
We assure you that we won't increase your premium or cancel your coverage during an active policy term due to a claim. We understand that filing a claim can be stressful and we don't want to add to that stress by affecting your premium.
However, when it's time to renew your policy, we'll review the details of your business and vehicle activity. If there are changes from when you first applied, we may need to adjust the premium up or down accordingly.
I run my business out of my vehicle. Does Commercial Auto cover this type of vehicle?
We do not provide insurance coverage for food trucks or mobile businesses that operate out of a van or truck at this time. While we can cover businesses that require transportation of goods or equipment, our policy does not extend to businesses that operate as mobile units.
Can I buy Commercial Auto insurance by itself?
Yes, you can! While you can purchase commercial auto insurance on its own, it's often recommended to also purchase general liability insurance to protect your business from other potential risks. General liability insurance can help cover costs such as medical expenses and legal fees. Additionally, when you bundle your commercial auto insurance and general liability insurance, you may be eligible for a discount on both policies.
Can I combine a Commercial Auto policy with my existing GravySpoon insurance liability policy?
Yes, you can receive a discount of up to 10% by bundling multiple policies together with NEXT Insurance. To add another policy, you can call us at 000-000-000 between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday to Friday or email us at email@email.com.
Is Commercial Auto insurance cheaper than personal car insurance?
No. The cost of commercial auto insurance is typically higher than personal car insurance due to the increased risks associated with using vehicles for business purposes. Commercial auto insurance is designed to provide coverage for liability, property damage, and other risks that are unique to commercial use. In addition, commercial auto policies typically have higher liability limits and may offer additional coverage options that are not included in personal car insurance policies. These factors all contribute to the higher cost of commercial auto insurance.
Can I drive out of the state where my vehicle is registered?
Yes, you can! Your commercial auto policy from GravySpoon will provide coverage for your business vehicles when driven out of state. However, it's important to note that certain restrictions may apply depending on the state you're traveling to and the type of vehicle you're driving. Make sure to review your policy and any state-specific requirements before traveling out of state.
What is the coverage area of this insurance policy? Can I drive outside of the U.S.?
Our commercial auto policies cover vehicles driven in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. However, coverage is not provided for driving in Mexico.
Do you offer personal auto insurance?
While we specialize in business insurance, it's worth noting that we can provide commercial auto insurance for personal vehicles that are also used for business purposes. For instance, if you own a truck that you use for both personal and professional use, such as landscaping, it can be insured under our policy when driven for work-related tasks.
I don’t feel comfortable providing my driver’s license number online. Can I still buy this insurance policy?
We acknowledge that the process of buying a commercial auto policy online may be unfamiliar and unexpected for some. However, it's important to note that we require your driver's license number to complete the process. Without it, purchasing a policy is not possible. Rest assured that we utilize the AES-256 encryption algorithm, which is the industry standard, to ensure the safety of your personal information. Additionally, we use a high level of encryption on the client side through SSL.
In the event of a claim, how is the value of my vehicle determined?
If you file a claim on your commercial auto policy, the value of your vehicle will be determined based on its actual cash value (ACV) or the cost of repairs required at the time of the incident. If you have a vehicle loan, there may be coverage available to bridge the gap between the remaining balance on the loan and the ACV of the vehicle.
How is the “Actual Cash Value” of my vehicle determined?
When an accident occurs, an appraiser determines the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle. The ACV is calculated by subtracting the wear and tear costs of the car from its replacement value. Typically, a car's replacement value is not the same as the price paid at the dealership. The car's age, make and model, mileage, and previous accidents will also affect its value. Therefore, the ACV is typically less than the original purchase price.
Does Commercial Auto insurance cover a rental car after an accident?
This policy for commercial auto insurance can help cover rental reimbursement expenses in case of an accident for specific policy packages. However, it does not provide coverage for any damage to the rental cars.
What does medical payment and personal injury protection cover?
If you are involved in an accident related to your vehicle, you can rely on the medical payments (MedPay) coverage to receive reimbursement for your medical bills if you get injured. Another option is personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, which is similar to MedPay and may also provide coverage for lost wages and other expenses, such as ambulance costs, that may differ from state to state.
Am I the owner of the vehicle or is it registered to my business?
You can register the vehicle listed on your commercial auto policy in either your name or your business name. It's important to include any regular drivers of the vehicle on your GravySpoon commercial auto policy. Although occasional drivers will generally be covered by your policy, regular drivers who use the vehicle for business purposes may not be covered unless they are listed on the policy.
What does liability coverage for an auto insurance policy mean?
In many states, there are specific types of accidents that require your business-owned vehicles to be insured with auto liability coverage. This coverage helps pay for the other person's expenses if you are driving and are found to be at fault in a car accident and are liable for the incident. Liability coverage generally covers two types of incidents, namely bodily injury and property damage. Thus, liability insurance under a commercial auto policy may cover medical expenses and property damage resulting from an at-fault accident.
Are trailers covered under Commercial Auto insurance?
The commercial auto policy may offer liability coverage for the trailer being towed, but this coverage may vary depending on the policy. For instance, if the trailer collides with another vehicle, a utility trailer being used for business purposes may be covered. However, physical damage to the trailer itself is not typically covered, and separate trailer insurance will have to be purchased for such protection.
Can I insure my motorcycle with this insurance if I use it for my business?
We do not provide commercial auto coverage for motorcycles at this time.

Business insurance is divided into different policies. We offer 7 types so it's easy to design the coverage that fits your business.
Accidentally damaged customer property? General liability insurance makes those uh-oh moments okay by covering a wide range of incidents and basic risks. Contractors and cleaners can add tools and equipment coverage to protect their gear, as well.
If you have employees, workers’ comp is mandatory in almost every state to help cover medical bills and lost wages if a workplace accident occurs. And don’t forget about the boss — add business owner’s coverage to protect yourself as well.
If you’re accused of making an error at work, we’ve got your back. Get professional liability insurance (also known as errors & omissions insurance) and you’ll be protected from certain types of lawsuits and claims.
Vehicle-related damage shouldn’t mean you have to pump the brakes on your bottom line. With commercial auto, you’re covered for dents, tows and damage to someone else’s car or truck. Add HNOA coverage for extra protection on rentals and employee vehicles.
Add a tools and equipment upgrade to your general liability insurance. If your gear ever gets damaged or stolen, we’ll be there to abracadabra them back in a flash.
Commercial property insurance isn’t just for buildings — it can protect almost all the gear, inventory and equipment you need to do business. We'll make sure your lights stay on if a fire, water damage or other covered event causes an interruption to your business.
A business owner’s policy (BOP) combines general liability and commercial property into one handy package. It’s a great option for protecting your business if you have a physical location, equipment or inventory and if you deal with customers or the public.
